How to Change the Battery in a Prado Key

If your Toyota Prado key fob is no longer unlocking your doors or starting the car, it may be time to replace the battery. This guide will walk you through the steps to replace the battery in your key fob with easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams.

Tools & Materials Needed:

  • Small flathead screwdriver

  • New battery - CR1616

  • Clean cloth or tissue

Step 1: Open the Key Fob

  1. Locate the small screw on the key fob where the two halves meet.

  2. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the screw and gently twist to separate the key fob into two halves.

  3. Be careful not to apply too much force to avoid damaging the plastic casing.

Step 2: Open the Immobiliser Unit

  1. Identify the immobiliser unit inside the key fob.

  2. Use the screwdriver to undo the 2 screws holding the immobiliser unit together.

  3. You should now be able to see the battery inside.

Step 3: Insert the New Battery

  1. Check the polarity markings inside the battery compartment.

  2. Place the new battery with the positive (+) side facing up.

  3. Press it down gently until it clicks into place.

Step 4: Reassemble the Key Fob

  1. Align the two halves of the immobiliser together. And put the 2 screws back together.

  2. Seal the immobiliser in the key shell and secure with the screw.

  3. Ensure there are no gaps and that the key fob is securely closed.

Step 5: Test the Key Fob

  1. Press the buttons on the key fob to ensure it locks/unlocks the car.

  2. If your Prado has keyless start, test the ignition system.

  3. If the key fob does not work, double-check the battery placement.

  • If the key fob still does not work, the battery might be faulty—try another one.

  • Avoid touching the battery contacts with your fingers to prevent corrosion.
