Guide to Camping at Gunn Point, Darwin NT

Welcome to one of the best hidden gems in the Northern Territory.

Just a short 60 minute drive from Darwin, is a huge beautiful beach - called Gunn Point.

If you’re in Darwin, this place is a must visit for camping, fishing and 4WDing.

Gunn Point has some of the best beach camping in Australia!

Getting to Gunn Point

Gunn Point is a straightforward drive from Darwin, taking roughly an hour along Gunn Point Road. The road is sealed for most of the journey, but the final stretch to get onto the beach is sandy and can get a few cars bogged.

4WDs are quite comfortable getting onto the beach at Gunn Point, if you’re in a 2WD or AWD car - make sure to let your tyres deflate and use a bit of speed.

What to Do at Gunn Point

🎣 Fishing Fever

If you’re an angler, welcome to paradise. Gunn Point’s waters are packed with barramundi, mud crabs, and more. Just bring your gear, check the fishing rules, and keep an eye out for crocodiles. They like the water as much as you do—maybe even more.

Leaders Creek is right next to Gunn Point and is a great place to launch the boat and have a fish. It is also a good place to access the Vernon islands.

🏕️ Camp Like a Pro

Picture this: a tent pitched under the stars, a campfire crackling, and the sound of waves in the distance. Gunn Point delivers camping vibes on a whole new level. It’s rustic, though, so BYO everything—food, water, and a sense of adventure.

🚙 4WD & Beach Walks

Got a 4WD? Gunn Point’s beaches are your playground. Low tide reveals vast stretches of sand perfect for driving or strolling. But fair warning: know your tides, or you might be calling a tow truck instead of enjoying the sunset.

🐊 Wildlife Spotting

From wallabies hopping around to birds soaring overhead, Gunn Point’s wildlife game is strong. Keep your binoculars handy and your distance from any crocs. Trust us—you don’t want to meet one up close.

📸 Snap the Magic

Whether it’s fiery sunsets, dramatic coastlines, or your mates mid-campfire story, Gunn Point’s a feast for your camera. Bring your drone if you’ve got one—the aerial views are chef’s kiss.

Exploring the beach at low tide is epic!

Best Time to Visit (AKA When Not to Sweat Buckets)

Dry season (May to October) is the sweet spot. Think clear skies, comfy temps, and easier road access. Wet season? It’s less “adventure” and more “mud pit,” so unless you’re chasing storms and mozzies, plan accordingly.

Top Gunn Point Tips (Read These, You’ll Thank Us Later)
