How to Replace the Starter Motor on a Landcruiser Prado 120 Series

Do you need to remove or replace the starter motor on your Prado 120 series?

This tutorial will help you achieve that.

It's overall not a complicated task to remove the starter motor, but it is a fiddly task. So you will need patience and the right tools.

I recommend having basic hand tools, including a breaker bar and an extension bar. That will make your life much easier when trying to remove the starter motor.

Below is a written tutorial & a video tutorial.

How to Replace a Starter Motor

The steps I followed were:

  1. Securely jack up your car & remove the front left tyre. This is how we will be accessing the starter motor.

  2. Disconnect the negative terminal on your battery.

  3. Unbolt & unplug the wires running into the starter motor.

  4. Unbolt the starter motor with the 2 nuts at the rear. This can be really fiddly, and the nuts can be tight. So I recommend using some 4WD-40 & a breaker bar.

  5. Using a vice, transfer the stud from the old starter motor to the new. If you wind 2 nuts onto the stud, this can help you untwist the stud.

  6. Install the new starter motor, bolting it on & plugging it in.
