How to Install a New Suction Control Valve on Your Toyota D4D Engine
Replacing the suction control valve (SCV) on your Toyota D4D engine (1KD-FTV) is a task that can significantly improve fuel efficiency, reduce engine hesitation, and restore proper fuel delivery. This guide will walk you through the step-by-step process of installing a new SCV.
Safety First
Before beginning the installation, ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area. Wear gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself from fuel and debris. Always disconnect the vehicle's battery to avoid accidental short circuits.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
Step 1: Locate the Suction Control Valve
Open the hood and locate the fuel pump. The suction control valve is mounted on the high-pressure fuel pump.
Refer to your vehicle’s manual for the exact location of the SCV if you are unsure.
Locate the SCV, it should look similar to this.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent accidental electrical issues.
Step 3: Remove the Old Suction Control Valve
Disconnect the electrical connector from the SCV by pressing the tab and gently pulling it away.
Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts securing the SCV to the fuel pump.
Carefully pull the SCV out of the fuel pump. Be prepared for some residual fuel to spill; use a rag to catch it.
Clean the mounting area with brake cleaner and ensure there is no debris.
The SCV has been removed.
Step 4: Install the New Suction Control Valve
Compare the old SCV with the new one to ensure they match.
Place the new SCV into the mounting position on the fuel pump.
Secure it with the bolts, tightening them by hand initially to avoid cross-threading.
Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque.
Reconnect the electrical connector to the SCV.

Step 5: Reconnect the Battery
Reattach the negative terminal of the battery.
Step 6: Prime the Fuel System
Replace the fuel pump fuse.
Turn the ignition to the "ON" position (do not start the engine) to allow the fuel pump to prime the system.
Repeat this process a few times to ensure the fuel system is pressurized.
Step 7: Test the Engine
Start the engine and let it idle.
Check for leaks around the SCV. Tighten bolts if necessary.
Take the vehicle for a short test drive to ensure proper performance. Pay attention to smoother acceleration and reduced hesitation.
